Newcastle United piled the pressure on Manchester United with an emphatic 5-1 victory over the league’s bottom club Sheffield United to boost their hopes of a top six finish.

The result allowed Newcastle to move a point closer to Erik ten Hag’s side heading into the final run-in, however, Toon fans know that if they are to have a good chance of qualifying for Europe then they will have to buck the trend which has haunted them for most of the season - their away form. Heading into the trip to Burnley, Newcastle have managed a dismal 14 points from a possible 48 on the road - only Nottingham Forest, Luton Town and Sheffield United have accumulated less points in this period.

Eddie Howe’s men will hope to put that record right at Turf Moor, but as ever will have to overcome an extensive injury list which was only escalated when Fabian Schar was forced off the field last time out. With that in mind we take a look at the latest information on Newcastle’s injury list and the players that are likely to make the trip to Burnley:

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle hope Kieran Trippier will return for the final three matches of the season to aid their European push. The former Burnley right back has missed the last two months with a calf injury and is currently in Dubai, where he is working with a physio and fitness coach.

Fabian Schar

Was forced off the pitch at half-time against Sheffield United with what looked to be a hamstring injury. The Swiss international is pushing hard to return against Burnley.

Miguel Almiron

Miguel Almiron returned to the grass last week for the first time since a knee injury, though Eddie Howe did reveal that he hadn’t been in full training. The Paraguayan Is likely to be integrated back into the squad this week and will hope to be fit in time for the Burnley clash.

Nick Pope

Former Burnley shot stopper Nick Pope has been absent since suffering a dislocated shoulder in December. Was provisionally tipped to return in April, but is still yet to return to full first team training, though he has joined in with some of the drills. Is running out of time to be fit for the Euros and is not yet ready to make his comeback.

Joelinton

Eddie Howe told the Shields Gazette that Joelinton has seen a specialist and is working on his own programme. The Burnley match may come too soon for the Brazilian, but there is optimism that he may return for the six-pointer against Manchester United.

Lewis Miley

Newcastle’s teenage sensation Lewis Miley will not return to first team duties until at least pre-season as he recovers from a back injury.

Joe Willock

Joe Willock has struggled with various injuries throughout the season. The latest achilles problem, sustained against Fulham has ruled him out until at least pre-season.

Jamaal Lascelles

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is yet another victim of an ACL injury. Could miss the remainder of 2024 due to injury.

Matt Targett
