Who has made it into the 3AM alternative Premier League team of the season?

The Premier League season is over and the usual suspects will receive their praise after the likes of Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard all shone for the leading lights in English football’s top flight.

An intriguing title fight between Manchester City and Arsenal went the way of Pep Guardiola’s men as they set a new record by becoming the first side to in a fourth consecutive Premier League title - and several of the City stars have made it into the team of the season.

But there are a whole host of Premier League players that may have gone slightly under the radar during the campaign - so we present to you the 3AddedMinutes alternative Premier League team of the season:

GK Djordje Petrovic - Chelsea

Perhaps a strange choice given Petrovic didn’t make a Premier League appearance until he came off the bench to make a late substitute appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Everton in mid-October. But the Blues stopper has solidified himself as number one and only lost four of his following 22 starts an kept five clean sheets as Chelsea made a successful push for a Europa League place.

RB Diogo Dalot - Manchester United

Choosing a Manchester United defender in this side may seem unusual but Dalot has been one of the few consistencies in a season ruined by inconsistency for the men from Old Trafford. The Portuguese full-back has played on both sides of Erik ten Hag’s defence during the season and has probably solidified his place in the Red Devils squad for next season - although that could depend on who is in charge of course!

LB Antonee Robinson - Fulham

It’s strange to think the United States international’s career could have taken a very different path had a move to AC Milan not fallen through on medical grounds. The Serie A club’s loss was Fulham’s gain and Robinson has been in fine form for the Cottagers this season, providing energy and power down their left-hand side throughout the campaign.

CB James Tarkowski - Everton

With centre-back partner Jarrad Branthwaite taking most of the limelight, Tarkowski has quietly gone about his business and has played a lead role in helping the Toffees preserve their Premier League status, despite being hit with points deductions during the campaign. A true leader, the former Burnley man actually made it into our stats-based England squad for the European Championship this summer.

CB Fabian Schar - Newcastle United

It hasn’t been an easy season for Newcastle after Eddie Howe has been forced to contend with a seemingly never-ending list of injuries. Despite seeing players dropping like flies around him, Schar has been in excellent form during the campaign and is surely viewed as one of the best value for money signings in the Premier League in recent years.

CM Pascal Gross - Brighton and Hove Albion

There must be times when Gross feels like the last-man standing in the Brighton midfielder after watching on and seeing the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister heading for pastures new in recent seasons. The five-times capped Germany international continues to produce consistent performances away from the limelight and deserves wider recognition for his displays during a challenging season for the Seagulls.

CM Douglas Luiz - Aston Villa

What a season it has been for Villa and what a season it has been for Luiz! The Brazilian midfielder has been one of the key reasons why Unai Emery’s men will compete in the Champions League next season. With nine goals and five assists in 35 league appearances, Luiz has been at the heart of everything good about Villa, providing a solid base in the middle of the pitch and he will continue to be a major part of Emery’s side during an exciting season next time out.

CM Wateru Endo - Liverpool

There was a certain sense of intrigue when Japan international Endo was signed to replace Liverpool stalwarts Jordan Henderson and Fabinho last summer. It would be safe to suggest many expect a big name player to come into a key role in the Reds midfielder - but Endo has slotted into life at Anfield with ease and has produced a number of impressive performances in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

FW Bryan Mbeumo - Brentford

Given the self-imposed one player per club role, it was a toss up between Mbeumo and Yoan Wissa for this one as the duo have come to the fore to help the Bees cope with the absence of Ivan Toney during the season. Both players have been in outstanding form but it’s Mbeumo that takes the place by the narrowest of margins. In reality, either player would be fully deserving of a spot in this side after producing 15 goal involvements apiece (goals and assists) during the Premier League season.

FW Jean Philippe Mateta - Crystal Palace

With the forward ranks in the usual Premier League team of the season likely to be taken by the likes of Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins, there is no doubt Mateta should be at the front of the queue for our alternative eleven. Although the former Mainz frontman may not have hit the net until his side’s sixteenth league game and only scored twice before Christmas, he did go on to enjoy a stunning second half to the season, ending the campaign with 16 league goals and five assists in 35 appearances.

FW Dominic Solanke - Bournemouth

The 2022/23 season was somewhat underwhelming for Solanke with just six Premier League goals to his name - but the same could not be said of the season just gone after the former Liverpool man plundered his way to 19 goals in 38 appearances. That total was only bettered by Erling Haaland, Cole Palmer and Alexander Isak and equals the tally set by Ollie Watkins, which is why Solanke could and should have been in the conversation for a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
